Free Makes Work - Nein Danke.

Minister Éamonn O’Cuiv, has proposed that welfare recipients might be obliged to “work for the dole”. INOU’s Bríd O’Brien explains to Michael FitzGerald, why this is a clear case of treating the labour sector as the poor relations of the economy, when one examines the resources that have been lavished/squandered on the financial sector.

Michael observes that the call to the unwaged to “Work for Free” sounds suspiciously similar to the sign above the entrance to the Auschwitz-Birkenau deathcamp “Arbrit Macht Frei” (“work makes one free”).

Pakistan - an introduction!

Michael FitzGerald and Robbie Sinnott, look at the devasting floods in Pakistan and ask how much the power structure of the country has contributed to the misery currently being experience by that nation’s citizens.

While looking at the country’s history, particularly the involvement of it’s military in economics and politics, they question whether government policies have exacerbated an already bad situation, by investing in nuclear weapons at the expense of social infrastructure and services, and risk turning the Islamic Republic into a failed state.

Gaza Flotilla sails again.

Claudia Saba and Michael FitzGerald, discuss the appeal to raise funds to purchase another boat to take part in a Gaza flotilla. They look back at issues raised by the first flotilla and what is hoped to be achieved by this new endeavour aimed at breaking the Israeli blockade.

They further reflect on the topical issues particularly the commencement of direct talks currently taking place in Washington and the killing this week of four Israelis, which HAMAS have claimed responsibility for.
